Dancy Associates, headed by Dr. Joseph Dancy, Jr., promotes civic engagement and training in ethical leadership across races and cultures. With our principal consultant being a theologian and gerontologist, we are able to provide consultations, training and workshops in the areas of aging, caregiving, spirituality, cultural diversity and ethical leadership.

Dr. Joseph Dancy, Jr. is a native of Brooklyn, New York.  After earning his undergraduate degree from Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia, he received a Master of Divinity degree from the School of Theology (now called the Samuel Proctor School of Theology) at Virginia Union University.  He also earned a Master of Theology degree from Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey. In addition to his theological training, Dr. Dancy received the doctorate degree in Educational Gerontology from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.  He has completed the Intensive Bioethics Course at Georgetown University, and he has also participated in medical ethics education through Michigan State University’s School of Medicine.

Dr. Dancy’s accomplished oratorical skills have afforded him opportunities to speak at churches and programs throughout the United States, including being a featured speaker at the well-known Hampton Ministers’ Conference held annually at Hampton University in Virginia.  In 2014 and 2016 he returned to the Hampton Ministers Conference to present invited workshops entitled “When Families Are Under Stress: Applying Biblical and Practical Principles to Pastoral Care” and “Spirituality and Caregiving: What Churches Need to Know and What Church Leaders Need to Do” respectively. His published articles include “Faith of our Fathers (Mothers) Living Still: Spirituality as a Force for Transmission of Family Values Within the Black Community” (co-authored with M.L. Wynn-Dancy), as well as The Nature of Caring in Volunteerism Within Geriatric Settings” [co-authored with M.L. Wynn-Dancy]. He was awarded a grant from the H.R. Kendall Fund through the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church that provided training for caregivers of the elderly through local churches and community centers.

Dr. Dancy has held a number of consultantships and positions in gerontology, as well.  While residing in the Washington, DC area, he was Gerontologist/Trainer for the National Council on Aging.  Dr. Dancy has served as keynote speaker, conducted train-the-trainer sessions and workshops on spirituality and aging, caregiving, end-of-life issues, cultural diversity, as well as grandparents raising grandchildren for a number of social service agencies and organizations.  He is the author of the book, The Black Elderly: A Guide for Practitioners. Dr. Dancy has given presentations on pre-retirement planning at several annual meetings of The Association of American Law Schools.

In May, 2001 Dr. Dancy was the recipient of a City Manager’s Award in recognition of quality service to the city of Virginia Beach, Virginia.  In May, 2006 Dr. Dancy was one of twenty persons in a group delegation led by a Michigan State University professor to participate in a visitation to Kenya, East Africa to observe the Jitegemee child welfare program for abandoned, neglected and abused children in the Machakos section of central Kenya.  This is a highly successful child welfare program currently serving approximately 130 children through counseling, education and vocational training. This experience increased Dr. Dancy’s knowledge base about human behavior and cultural diversity within a global context.

Dr. Dancy also has extensive knowledge of the theologian, Dr. Howard Thurman’s life and work. Thurman, a mystic and prolific writer, served for a number of years as Dean of the Chapel at Boston University. In April, 2017, Dr. Dancy served as co-convener of the Howard Thurman Conference held at the Upper House, a spiritual center located adjacent to the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.
